Sailing the Spanish Virgin Islands: Culebra and Vieques

The Spanish Virgin Islands
Puerto Rico’s quieter side.

Culebra and Vieques sit just west of the US Virgin Islands. It’s a longer trip than most of our guests take, so ask us first and we’ll help you decide if it fits your week.

Culebra.

Flamenco Beach regularly lands on lists of the world’s best beaches, and Tamarindo is the place to snorkel with sea turtles in the Luis Peña marine reserve. For a quiet day, hop over to Culebrita for its old lighthouse and the secluded sand of Tortuga Beach.

Vieques.

Culebra’s bigger, wilder sister. Take a guided night tour of Mosquito Bay, the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world, watch horses wander the beaches, find the black sand beach, visit the giant, centuries-old ceiba tree, and grab fish tacos along the waterfront in Esperanza.

Clearing in.

Culebra and Vieques are part of Puerto Rico, so you’ll clear into the US on arrival, usually with the free CBP ROAM app, whether you’re coming from the BVI or the USVI. Bring passports for everyone, and we’ll go over the details with you before your trip, since the rules can change.

Rather stay close?

There’s more than enough to fill a week in the BVI and USVI. Here’s where most of our guests sail.

British Virgin Islands →

Norman Island, The Baths, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke: our home waters and favorite stops.

US Virgin Islands →

Lameshur Bay, Cruz Bay and Lime Out on St. John, just an easy sail away.
